Frequently Asked Questions
How much will I have in my MPF at retirement?+
It depends on your salary, contribution years, and fund returns. For a 30-year-old earning HK$25,000/month with 5% annual returns, mandatory contributions alone could accumulate to roughly HK$2.5-3 million by age 65. Adding TVC or choosing higher-return equity funds can significantly increase this amount.
Is TVC worth it?+
For most taxpayers earning above HK$400,000/year, TVC provides a guaranteed return through tax savings (typically 6-17% effective rate on the HK$60,000 contribution). That is HK$3,600-10,200 in annual tax savings. The funds also grow tax-free within MPF until withdrawal. However, the money is locked until age 65.
Can I choose which fund my MPF goes into?+
Yes. Every MPF scheme offers a range of funds β typically equity, mixed, bond, money market, and a Default Investment Strategy (DIS) that automatically adjusts allocation as you age. You can switch between funds at any time for free through your trustee. For TVC, you can even choose a different trustee from your employer's scheme.
What is the maximum mandatory MPF contribution?+
The maximum relevant income for mandatory contributions is HK$30,000/month. At 5% each for employer and employee, the maximum is HK$1,500/month per party (HK$3,000 total, or HK$36,000/year). Even if you earn HK$100,000/month, mandatory contributions are capped at HK$30,000 base.
