MPF Fund Switch Processing Time and Daily Cut-off
Pick when you submit and this works out your MPF fund switch processing time: the price date and the completion date.
Short answer
- The cut-off is 16:00 Hong Kong time on every working day, on one platform, for every scheme.
- A switch of your existing balance completes within 2 working days, or 3 if your scheme prices on the next day.
- Two working days can be seven calendar days when a holiday cluster sits in the middle.
- The one to two weeks you have read about is scheme transfer, not switching inside your own scheme.

Worked examples
Every MPF fund switch processing time below is produced by the calculator above, so a card can never disagree with it. Filter by the kind of trap you are worried about.
What a working day means here
MPF fund switch processing time is counted in working days, and a working day is Monday to Friday with public holidays taken out. That single definition is what makes the pledge feel slower than it reads. Two working days across an ordinary midweek stretch is two calendar days. The same two working days submitted at 16:30 on the Friday before Lunar New Year 2027 is seven, because Saturday is New Year, Sunday follows, and the third and fourth days of the new year take out the Monday and Tuesday.
One detail decides whether the completion date lands a day early or late, and eMPF spells it out: the turnaround is calculated from the working day following the date of receipt, not from the receipt day itself. So a switch received on the Monday has its first pledged working day on the Tuesday, and the two working day standard runs out at the close of the Wednesday. This calculator counts it that way.
The holiday dates behind this calculator are the General Holidays gazetted on gov.hk for 2026 and 2027, read on 28 July 2026. Severe weather is the one loose end. eMPF said in a notice effective 27 February 2025 that switching stays open on a severe weather trading day, while the footnote to its own service pledge still writes typhoon and black rainstorm days out of the definition of a working day. This calculator follows the newer notice and counts them as ordinary weekdays.
Switching inside your scheme is not transferring away from it
If you have read that an MPF switch takes one to two weeks, you have read a number that belongs to a different transaction. The MPFA uses roughly one to two weeks to describe the investment gap when benefits move to another scheme or trustee: the old trustee sells first, then the new trustee buys. The MPFA attaches that figure specifically to the transfer of an MPF scheme. Changing which funds you hold inside the scheme you are already in is the transaction eMPF covers with its two working day pledge.
The other stale claim worth retiring is the per trustee cut-off. All twelve MPF trustees finished onboarding to eMPF, which the MPFA confirmed in May 2026. The 16:00 cut-off belongs to the platform, and the MPFA states the same time on its own site. With all twelve integrated, that is the time that applies to a switch you submit through eMPF. If you find a page listing a different cut-off for each trustee, check its date before you trust it.
What this tool cannot tell you
- Not ideal for: anyone hoping to time the market. Knowing the MPF fund switch processing time does not help, because you commit before the price exists: the unit price comes off the net asset value at the close of the price date.
- Not ideal for: working out a scheme transfer. Those run on a different timetable and a different set of steps.
- Neither eMPF nor the MPFA publishes how long your money sits outside both funds during an intra scheme switch, so this page does not put a number on it.
- Some trustees cap how many switches you may make in a scheme year. The MPFA points members to their own MPF Scheme Brochure, and there is no single number to quote.
Where these numbers come from
- eMPF Platform service pledge gives the 2 and 3 working day standards and defines same day and next day fund price.
- eMPF member FAQ on investment gives the 16:00 cut-off and the cancellation window.
- MPFA on the investment gap is the source of the one to two weeks figure, and it is about scheme transfer.
- MPFA on completed eMPF onboarding confirms all 12 trustees are on the platform as of May 2026.
- gov.hk general holidays 2026 and 2027 supply every holiday date the calculator skips.
- eMPF severe weather arrangement is the notice this calculator follows when a typhoon signal is up.
Questions members actually ask
How long does an MPF fund switch take?
The short version of MPF fund switch processing time: the eMPF service pledge says a switch of your existing account balance is completed within 2 working days for schemes that use same day fund price, and within 3 working days for schemes that use next day fund price. Only the SHKP MPF Employer Sponsored Scheme uses next day pricing, so almost everyone is on the 2 working day standard. Working days here mean Monday to Friday excluding public holidays, which is why the same 2 working days can be 2 calendar days in an ordinary week and 7 over Lunar New Year.
What is the daily cut-off time for a switching instruction?
Four in the afternoon, Hong Kong time, on each working day. The eMPF service pledge states it plainly, and it applies to every scheme on the platform. An instruction that arrives at or after 16:00, or at any time on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, is deemed to have been received on the next working day. Note that 16:00 sharp is already late: the wording is at or after the cut-off time, not after it.
I heard the cut-off is 3pm and depends on which trustee I am with. Is that right?
It is not right any more, and the trustee half was never the useful part. All 12 MPF trustees finished onboarding to eMPF, which the MPFA confirmed in May 2026. One platform now means one cut-off, and that cut-off is 16:00. Pages still claiming a 3pm cut-off, or listing a different time for each trustee, are describing arrangements that ended when their scheme moved across. If you want the pre-eMPF comparison point, BOC-Prudential published its own cut-off back in 2017 and it was also 4pm.
Which day sets the unit price if I submit after 4pm?
The next working day. For a same day price scheme the price date is the day eMPF is deemed to have received the instruction, so submitting at 16:05 on Friday pushes your price date to Monday, or later if Monday is a holiday. This is also why you cannot know the execution price when you press submit. The unit price is worked out from the net asset value at the close of the price date, which has not happened yet.
I submitted before the cut-off and 24 hours later it still shows as unprocessed. Is something wrong?
Probably not, and this is the single most common complaint on Hong Kong forums about eMPF switching. A thread on discuss.com.hk is titled exactly that, and the reply that matches the published pledge came from another member describing what he sees: processing on the following working day, completed the working day after that. Within 2 working days is a deadline, not a promise of speed, and the status can sit unchanged for most of the first day. What is worth checking is whether your instruction actually landed before 16:00, because a submission a few minutes late silently becomes a next working day submission.
Why do so many articles say switching takes one to two weeks?
Because they are quoting the number for a different transaction. The MPFA figure of roughly one to two weeks describes the investment gap when you transfer your benefits to a different scheme or trustee, where the old trustee has to sell your funds before the new trustee can buy the ones you picked. The MPFA attaches that figure specifically to the transfer of an MPF scheme, while eMPF covers a change of investment allocation inside your existing scheme with its 2 working day pledge. Mixing the two up is the most common error in Hong Kong content on this topic, and it makes an ordinary switch sound five times slower than it is.
Is my money out of the market while the switch is running?
Partly, and neither eMPF nor the MPFA publishes a figure for how long that gap is on an intra scheme switch, so this page does not put a number on it. What is documented is the shape of the transaction: units in the old fund are redeemed and the proceeds are invested into the new fund, priced off the net asset value at the close of the price date. Between those two legs your money is not tracking either fund. The practical consequence is the one the MPFA keeps repeating in a different context: you are committing to a price you cannot see, so a switch made to dodge a moving market is a bet, not a hedge.
Can I cancel a switching instruction after I submit it?
Under normal circumstances yes. The eMPF member FAQ says to check the status under My Account and My Record, and that if the instruction has not yet been processed you can click Cancel Instruction. It adds that under normal circumstances cancellation is allowed before the daily cut-off time of 16:00 on a working day. Treat the cut-off as the deadline you can rely on rather than counting on a later cancellation, because whether the instruction has already been processed is not something you control.
What happens if I switch on a typhoon or black rainstorm day?
This is the one place where eMPF contradicts itself, so treat the answer as unsettled. Its severe weather notice, effective 27 February 2025, says members can keep switching funds through the website and the app on a severe weather trading day. The footnote to its own service pledge still defines a working day as excluding any day on which Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above, or a Black Rainstorm Warning, is in force between 09:00 and 17:45. This calculator treats such days as ordinary weekdays, because that matches the newer notice, but if you are switching on one you should confirm with eMPF rather than rely on either page.
Is there a limit on how many times I can switch in a year?
The MPFA says some trustees may limit the number of switches a member can make per year, and points you to the MPF Scheme Brochure for your own scheme. There is no single portfolio wide number to quote, so check the brochure rather than assume you are unlimited. The timing rules on this page do not change with the count.
